Patient Support Fund
The Foundation supports four areas of need in which we provide patient support: Cancer Care, Renal Care, Palliative Care via the CAREY ME fund, and Inpatient transportation.
Patients experience a variety of pressures which can impact their care and recovery. This stream of funding helps patients in financial distress access the care they need. Patients can receive assistance, in working with their healthcare navigators and/or hospital social worker to receive supports like:
- Gas or grocery gift cards
- Coverage for uninsured medications, devices, and services (coordinated with local pharmacies and providers)

Sheila McKay Cancer Care Legacy Fund
To mark the ten-year anniversary of the Mud Creek Toonie Toss, Valley Regional Hospital Foundation, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Wolfville – Mud Creek, is proud to announce the Sheila McKay Cancer Care Legacy Fund. Sheila was a long-time Rotarian who founded the Mud Creek Rotary 50/50 Toonie Toss in 2013.
Upon learning of a cancer diagnosis, families have to adjust their lifestyles to accommodate treatment plans, medical appointments and hospital visits. Patients experience a variety of pressures which can impact their care and recovery.
The Sheila McKay Cancer Care Legacy Fund supports patients who are experiencing financial difficulty as they undergo cancer treatment at Valley Regional Hospital, while celebrating the legacy of Sheila McKay and the difference a toonie can make.
This partnership will help sustain current supports available through Valley Regional Hospital Foundation’s Cancer Care for Patients Fund (i.e. the provision of gas and grocery gift cards to patients in need) and will enable complimentary parking as an additional support for those patients. All donations will be matched by Mud Creek Rotary up to $25,000 per year.
CAREY ME: Palliative Care Fund
CAREY ME is a memorial fund in remembrance of Bill Carey maintained by volunteers, donor gifts, and fundraising events. Bill’s wife Marilynn and daughter Stephanie Carey enabled Bill to spend his last days at home in the comfort of family and friends and they wanted to help other families do the same.
The CAREY ME fund provides financial assistance to persons with life threatening illnesses, who choose to remain in the comfort of their home with family and loved ones.
Some items that are eligible for financial aid include:
- Palliative care medications
- Special feeds
- Rental of in-home equipment
- Hiring caregivers for respite care
- Ambulance fees
- Medical supplies
CAREY ME is administered by Valley Regional Hospital Foundation and is accessible by referral for Annapolis Valley patients in the Palliative Care Program.
Renal Care
The dialysis unit at Valley Regional sees 11,000 patient visits per year. Some spend 5 hours a day, 3 days a week in dialysis, making it impossible to work full-time.
The Renal Care Fund helps dialysis patients with financial barriers as they access life-saving treatment.
Inpatient Transportation
New this year, the Foundation has expanded its Patient Support Fund to include transportation assistance to those in Inpatients Units, and the ER. Patients in need can access assistance in working with their hospital Social Worker.
