Valley Regional Hospital Foundation Student Awards

We are pleased to present two 2020 Student Awards to Valley residents Emma Coleman and Michelle Song.

Emma Coleman expressed an interest in the medical field as far back as she can remember, a passion which has stayed with her. A graduate of Central Kings Rural High School, Emma completed three summer placements through the school’s Options and Opportunities program – two with Western Kings Memorial Health Centre and one with Valley Regional Hospital, learning to clean surgical instruments, package medicines and assist lab technicians with blood collection. These activities confirmed Emma’s interest in the medical field.

Emma has also been a Youth Leadership Council (YLC) volunteer for Valley Regional Hospital Foundation.

Accepted into St. Francis Xavier’s Nursing program, Emma hopes to work in the Neonatology, Cardiology or Gastroenterology areas. We wish her all the best in her studies, and are very proud to award Emma the 2020 Student Award Bursary.

Michelle Song has always worked hard to accomplish her goals. The 2020 Horton High graduate completed an International Baccalaureate (IB) and also has an Associate diploma from The Royal Conservatory of Music (ARCT). Music has been Michelle’s passion since the age of four, playing piano, clarinet and saxophone.

Competitive sports has also kept Michelle busy, where she played badminton since Grade 6 as Girls Doubles, winning Provincials twice. Michelle was a member of the Wolfville Tritons Swim Club for six seasons.

Even with this impressive line-up of activities, Michelle found time to volunteer at Valley Regional Hospital as a Junior Volunteer in the medical and surgical units, an environment Michelle came to identify as a potential career setting, aspiring to become a Doctor. The painful experience of a grandparent developing Alzheimer’s strengthened her interest in Neurology as a specialty.

We wish Michelle great success in her studies at McMaster University for their general first year Life Sciences Gateway program, and eventually their Honours Biochemistry-Biomedical Research Specialization, and we are very proud to award Michelle the 2020 Student Award Bursary.
