Legacy Programs

The Valley Regional Hospital Foundation has been the recipient of some wonderful gifts provided through bequests in wills and other gift planning options. We are very grateful for the generosity of those who consider these legacy gifts and welcome the opportunity to speak with anyone considering such a gift.

Please contact Gerry MacIsaac, Executive Director, at the Foundation office, 678-5414 or gmacisaac@avdha.nshealth.ca.

Gifts of Publicly Traded Securities

If you are contemplating a gift to the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation, you may want to consider donating gifts of securities.

Advantages

  • You are entitled to a charitable tax receipt for the fair market value of the gifted securities on the date the securities are received in our brokerage account.
  • Donations of publicly listed securities to charities are exempt from capital gains tax.
  • Realize the capital loss and apply the loss against past and future capital gains.
  • Offset taxes you would otherwise pay.

When you have decided on which securities to donate, instruct your broker to transfer the shares electronically or endorse the share certificates and forward them to the Foundation’s broker. You will receive a tax receipt for the value of the securities once this information is provided to the Foundation. By contacting the Foundation office in advance, we can provide the necessary information to your broker to facilitate a smooth and prompt transfer.

Mary Walsh wants to inspire others. That was her goal when she decided to make a donation to the Foundation using shares. Mary hopes others will see her action as something they themselves may also consider. The process is simple and beneficial to both the giver and receiver.

When Mary’s financial advisor suggested she consider a gift of shares to a charity she took time to think about who should be the beneficiary of her donation. Mary’s daughter Jane is a cancer survivor and Mary accompanied her on every visit to the Valley Regional Hospital Chemotherapy Unit. She saw first hand the care and attention given to each patient undergoing treatment and realized many patients also required additional support with nonmedical needs. Mary decided to designate her gift to both the Chemotherapy Unit and the Patient Navigator program.

We hope Mary’s gift will inspire others. On a daily basis, we are inspired by the generosity and thoughtfulness of our supporters who see the work of the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation as a critical piece of delivering quality care in the Valley.

Gifts of Life Insurance Back to top

A gift of life insurance allows you to make a larger donation to the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation than you may have thought possible, at relatively little cost. It is an investment in quality health care and your legacy to your family and community.

Advantages

  • A gift of life insurance does not reduce the value of your estate for your loved ones.
  • Your annual premium payments qualify for a charitable income tax receipt you can claim each year.
  • Life insurance proceeds are paid directly to the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation and are not subject to probate fees.

Jacques and Sylvia Delisle of Wolfville have found a creative way to give back to the area they love.

Both teachers, now retired, they lived in several Canadian provinces before deciding to move back to Nova Scotia in 2000. They have always contributed to charities and decided to continue this practice with a gift to Valley Regional Hospital Foundation. Their gift is in the form of life insurance.

In the process of redoing their wills and meeting with their financial planner, they were encouraged to consider using life insurance and charitable donations as a way to help reduce their taxes. This was an easy decision for them because they believe it is important to financially support organizations that serve others.

The process to assign a life insurance policy to a charity is fairly simple and the benefit to the donor is a tax receipt each year for the value of the premiums. Based on the value of the policy and the premium payments, it can generate a personal tax receipt for hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Jacques and Sylvia are pleased their decision will have such a positive impact on health care in the Valley and plan to remain in Wolfville and enjoy all the area has to offer.

For more information about making a gift of one of the following types, please contact Gerry MacIsaac, Executive Director, at (902) 678-5414 or by email at gmacisaac@avdha.nshealth.ca.

Your gift intention will be held in strictest confidence.

There are a few options to consider:

  1. Purchase a new policy, naming the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation as the irrevocable owner and beneficiary. You pay the premiums and receive an income tax receipt for the full amount of premiums paid.
  2. Donate an existing policy that you no longer need by designating the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation as the irrevocable owner and beneficiary.
  3. Make the Foundation the beneficiary of a new or existing policy. Your estate will receive an income tax receipt for the gift.

You should consult with your family and advisors if you are considering a gift of life insurance or any other type of planned gift.

Bequests Back to top

Gifts by will, or bequests, have become an increasingly important source of revenue for the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation, enabling us to continue to promote quality health care.

A gift in your will offers a lasting legacy for the health of your family and your community by ensuring Valley Regional Hospital provides essential, high quality service for future generations.

Advantages

  • Other than the cost of preparing your will, it doesn’t cost you anything to make a generous gift to ensure quality health care in the district.
  • A bequest allows you to make a long-term commitment without affecting your current standard of living. A bequest provides the comfort of knowing your assets are still available to you today if needed.
  • In many cases, it can allow you to make a larger gift to the Foundation than one made during your lifetime.
  • A bequest allows you to make a tax-effective gift. Your estate may claim charitable donations in the year of death equal to 100% of your net income. Any unused charitable donations can be carried back to the previous tax year at the same rate.

You may wish to consider leaving a specific dollar amount or a specific piece of personal property, or a share or percentage of your estate. Providing for the needs of your loved one and giving the rest (or residue) of your estate to the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation is an option you may want to consider.
